John Lofgren Monkey Boots Shinki Hikaku Horsebutt Timber
The John Lofgren Monkey Boots offer the ultimate combination of lace-to-toe style and ruggedness. In the USA, lace-to-toe boots are often associated with linemen and roofers, while in Europe, they carry a strong military heritage. John Lofgren Bootmaker's take on the classic Monkey Boot strikes a balance between style and comfort, with a construction that is exceptionally sturdy. Every detail — from materials to craftsmanship — has been thoughtfully considered.
The uppers are crafted from horsebutt leather sourced from the renowned Shinki Hikaku tannery in Japan — a tannery widely considered the world leader in horsehide leather tanning. Horsebutt (the densest, most prized section of the hide) offers exceptional structure, depth, and aging character. Initially, the leather may feel slightly stiff, but it quickly molds to the foot, providing an increasingly personalized fit over time. Its visual appeal is equally striking, showcasing a unique grain pattern that catches the light differently with every step.
Shinki Hikaku preserves the natural character of the hide, leaving authentic marks — bug bites, grain variation, scratches — intact rather than sanding them away. These imperfections are treated as enhancements, adding a rich narrative to each pair. No two boots will ever look exactly alike.
Construction follows traditional Goodyear welt methodology, fortified with USA-made storm welts for enhanced water resistance and structural integrity. Single, double, and triple stitching reinforces key stress areas, while Japanese-made steel shanks provide stability and long-term arch support.
The sole unit features USA-made Vibram 700 cork soles paired with Vibram 7335 cork heels — a combination that delivers traction, cushioning, and a refined vintage silhouette. An embossed padded leather heel pad adds all-day comfort. The boots sit on a 1-3/8" stacked heel with a 6" shaft, built on the John Lofgren 140 last.
Packaged with a Japanese-made John Lofgren Bootmaker box and dust bags.
Fit Notes: The Monkey Boots are available in a standard E width. The last runs large, so we recommend sizing down one full size from your standard US sneaker size or Brannock measurement. If you have wider feet, consider sizing down only half a size. In terms of fit, they are comparable to Red Wing boots (e.g., Lofgren Monkey Boots size 9 ≈ Red Wing size 9), and similar to Viberg Service Boots as well. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart to ensure the right fit.
